Interesting Stuff

Jacques Rivette is quoted about "Titanic" and Kate Winslet:
the actress is awful, unwatchable, the most slovenly girl to appear on the screen in a long, long time. That's why it's been such a success with young girls, especially inhibited, slightly plump American girls who see the film over and over as if they were on a pilgrimage: they recognize themselves in her, and dream of falling into the arms of the gorgeous Leonardo.
Yes, this man:

said this actress:

was "slovenly".

I don't even like "Titanic", but come on, Jacques.

The rest of the interview is here, and there are some real gems in there. As Madeline Kahn would say, "What a nice guy."

  1. I'm not a big fan of Ms. Winslet, but damn. Slovenly? I know internet males get really picky about the female form after solidifying in their armchair like the Space Jockey from Alien, covered in their masturbatory leavings, but I didn't think directors would stoop to such. The guy looks like if the camera panned down, he'd be holding open a trenchcoat revealing things we could never un-see.

  2. Maybe we never see him from the waist down because he too is glued to his chair by a thick layer of crusty bodily fluids.

I honestly tried to find some older photos of him, thinking maybe when he was Winslet's age he was a hot daddy, but he wasn't. And "slovenly" isn't at all apt in Winslet's case, although I'm sure he means fat=sloppy. Reminds me of Andre de Toth saying Hitchcock's films were "fat and lazy" as was Hitch himself.

  3. I'm not a fan of Titanic, and I generally really like the films of Rivette, but this was un-called for. I'm totally going to boycott his films now.
